Peter began his career in 1988 as an NHS general management trainee. He spent most of his 11 years in the NHS working in south London developing primary and community health services.
Peter joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1999. His first jobs there were as desk officer and then deputy head in the Drugs and International Crime Department.
Between 2001-2004 he was First Secretary at the British High Commission, New Delhi covering Indian domestic politics and human rights issues.
Most recently, from February 2005 until the end of last year, Peter headed the Afghan Drugs Inter-Departmental Unit, a cross-departmental team which led the UK's effort as international lead of the counter narcotics campaign in Afghanistan.
Since then he has managed a small Cabinet Office team responsible for co-ordinating the UK's overall Afghanistan strategy.
